Ocimum basilicum var. thyrsiflora

This native of Southeast Asia has been cultivated to provide a distinctive set of traits. It has an identifiable licorice flavor not present in sweet basil, and its flavor is more stable under high or extended cooking temperatures than that of sweet basil. Thai basil exhibits small narrow leaves and purple stems with a mauve (pink-purple) flower It is ideal for both culinary and decorative use. It grows 30-45 cm tall and is ideal for pots and small areas. It has the richest aroma of all the Thai Basils. It is interchangeable with sweet basil in most recipes but has a unique highly prized flavour.

It should be grown in a spot receiving at least 6 hrsof direct sunlight. It is actually quite hardy and will grow continuously given only water. Very much a warm season herb it does not tolerate frosts. Basil appreciates added organic matter in the soil. It should be grown in full sun and will rapidly grow in warm weather. Direct sow in spring, thin seedlings to 30cm apart. Keep soil moist, but not wet. Pinch out seed heads to prolong its life.
