BASIL - SACRED, red.

Ocimum tenuiflorum

This vigorous plant has beautiful red leaves and is ideal for both culinary and decorative use. The flavour intensifies on cooking and is often teamed with garlic, and hot chilies in Tai cooking. It is not interchangeable with sweet, basil in most recipes but has a unique highly prized flavour. It is said by Asian herbalists to reduce bloating and aid in diabetes and in reducing blood cholesterol. One of the most popular reasons for using it as a patio plant is that it is supposed to repel mosquitoes. It should be grown in a spot receiving at least 6 hrs of direct sunlight. It is actually quite hardy and will grow continuously given only water. Very much a warm season herb it does not tolerate frosts.

Basil appreciates added organic matter in the soil. It should be grown in full sun and will rapidly grow in warm weather. Direct sow in spring, thin seedlings to 30cm apart. Keep soil moist, but not wet. Pinch out seed heads to prolong its life.
