BASIL - SWEET GENOVA
BASIL - SWEET GENOVA
Ocimum basilicium
Sweet Basil Large Leaf Italian This is an attractive annual plant that grows up to 40cm tall and has shiny oval leaves and white flowers. Basil is a very popular culinary herb. The leaves are also used in combination with other herbs in tomato, vegetable and meat dishes. Leaves and sprigs may be preserved in oils and vinegars or butters. Grows best in warm to hot climates as it is very sensitive to frosts. In cooler climates, grow indoors in containers to protect during the cooler times.
Plant the seeds in late Spring to early Summer in warm zones, in cooler months in the tropics and in summer when the soil is warmer in colder areas. Sow seeds directly in to the garden to a depth of 2 - 3 mm, covering them with a light seed raising mix. Firm down and moisten the soil. Germination is relatively fast, and once the seedling pop up, ensure adequate watering is maintained. Feed occasionally with a nitrogen rich liquid fertiliser, especially if the plants are growing in containers. Basil is a popular companion plant with organic gardeners, as when you plant it next to tomatoes and capsicium, it is believed to improve their growth. It is also known for repelling flying insects.
