Basil is very much a warm season herb. It does not tolerate frosts and does appreciate added organic matter in the soil. Basil should be grown in the full sun and where it will grow quite rapidly. Direct sow the seed into the garden in spring, and thin seedlings to 30cm apart. Keep the soil moist, but not wet. Pinch out seed heads to help encourage denser growth and to prolong the life of this great basil plant.
