Great Lakes is a very old variety which has stood the test of time because it is such a great heading lettuce. It originated in USA and is respected for its ability to consistently produce an excellent tasting lettuce with tight heads. Lettuces like to be grown in mild conditions and do not like hot weather. They should be sown often to ensure a continuous supply. Sow the seeds very shallowly and rake in lighlty, keep the soil moist for the continued life of the plant and you will be rewarded with lovely salad greens. Any dryness will result in bitter leaves and bolting. Sow in all months in mild areas and cease sowing during mid winter in cold areas. Cease planting when hot conditions and dry conditions can be expected to arise. Lettuces grow well under trees where they get dappled shade.
