LETTUCE - GRAND RAPIDS
Lactuca sativa
This heritage lettuce from the 1800s is very fast growing and
can be harvested as early as 45 days. It has very large, very
soft, light green crisp leaves. Grand Rapids is well adapted to
a wide range of climates and is still one of the best variety for
early spring sowing. It is very popular for home hydroponic
growing and verticle gardens. Lettuces like to be grown in
mild conditions and do not like hot weather. They should be
sown often to ensure a continuous supply. Sow the seeds very
shallowly and rake in lightly. Keep the soil moist and you will
be rewarded with lovely salad greens. Any dryness will result in
bitter leaves and bolting will result. Sow in all months in mild
areas and cease sowing during mid winter in cold areas. Cease
sowing during hot conditions or whenever it can be expected
to arise. Lettuces grow well under trees where they receive
dappled shade.
