PAK CHOY - PURPLE
Brassica rapa var pekinensis
This strain of Pak Choi is an open non-heading variety,
with light green stems and glossy purplish black leaves.
It is a very fast maturing plant that one can start picking
outer leaves 3 weeks from planting. It is fully mature and
ready to harvest 45-50 days from sowing.
Pak Choy requires the same growing conditions as cabbage
to which it is very closely related. Ensure your soil
is enriched with lime and plenty of organic matter.
Make sure enough water is given for rapid growth
Sow seed all year round, although growth will be
slower in the extremes of winter and summer. In
summer it has a tendency to bolt to flower but this
is no problem as the flower heads can be eaten
in salads, stirfries, and steamed as you would
broccolini heads. Make sure you plant regular
sowings for a continuous supply in your kitchen.
Sow seed 0.5-1.0 cm deep Space plants 20-30 cm
apart in rows 30-45 cm apart.
