The plant likes moist soil and lots of manure and compost. It will slow down growth as the days begin to shorten but it is perrenial in tropical areas. The seed be sown 1cm deep in spring and planted closely (10-15cm apart) in order to maximise the number of growing tips. A trellis is advisable to facilitate the climbing of the branches and to reduce weed competition.
