Spinacia oleracea
This annual plant grows to 30 cm in height. The leaves are very variable in size, from about 2-30 cm long and 1-15 cm broad, with larger leaves at the base of the plant and small leaves higher on the flowering stem. It is fast maturing with a lessened tendency to bolt. Rich in vitamins. E & C and iron. The plant has good vigour with upright growth that is resistant to downy mildew. The leaves are suitable for baby leaf and full leaf production. They are excellent for salads and stir fries. It grows very easily and can grown in partial shade. It does best in free draining soils with compost mixed in. Apply plenty of water as with any leafy crops. Apply liquid fertiliser to ensure lush foliage. Sow seeds from late summer to early winter. Very Early spring sowings can be made in cooler climates.

Sow 0.5 cm deep Plant 2 to 3 seeds every hole spaced about 30cm apart and use the thinnings for baby leaf salad. This plant is the first seed planted in spring time.
