Tetragonia tetragonoides

This lovely plant, native to Australia is one of the most widely used native plants we have. It tastes like spinach and is used in the same ways. It should be boiled for 3-4 minutes to reduce oxalate levels. It grows well as far south as Tasmania and is perennial in most areas. Native to Australia and NZ, this is a very tough long lived plant that grows like a ground cover with thick stems and grow to a height of 15-30cm, with leaves sized 7 - 10cm long. Use young leaves and tips of stems raw or cooked. When cooked, the flavour resembles spinach. Older leaves are said to be high in oxalic acid content. It is recommended to blanch the stems and leaves for approx 4 mintues. Add leaves to stir frys, salads, stuffings, stews and soups. Warrigal greens have a high vitmain A and C content, iron and calcium, a protein level of 28.8%, and anti cancer properties.

New Zealand Spinach grows very easily. Simply scatter a few seeds onto the ground, and rake over with the rake. Water in, and within a week the seedlings will emerge. Very frost tolerant.
