Parris Island is in subtropical USA and this variety, as one could expect it to be is quite heat and drought tolerant and slow to bolt. The leaves make a large head and are very erect and may reach 30cm in length. The dark green leaves are crisp and sweet and tolerant of tip burn. Lettuces like to be grown in mild conditions and do not like hot weather. They should be sown often to ensure a continuous supply.
Sow the seeds very shallowly and rake in lighlty. Keep the soil moist for the continued life of the plant and you will be rewarded with lovely salad greens. Any dryness will result in bitter leaves and bolting will result. Sow in all months in mild areas and cease sowing during mid winter in cold areas. Cease sowing during hot conditions or whenever they can be expected to arise. Lettuces grow well under trees where they receive dappled shade.
