COLUMBINE - WILLIAM GUINESS

Aquilegia vulgaris

This beautiful dark purple, blackish bloom with a white corolla is a stunner.

Columbines, or Granny's Bonnets are very edible and taste sweet.

The leaves have a slightly cabbagy taste and like silverbeet should only be eaten in moderation.

They make a lovely colourful addition to your salads and any lightly cooked dishes.

The whole plant has been used for it's sedative, astringent, diuretic, sudorific and healing properties.

It is used in the form of teas, on open wounds and to treat lice and insect problems.

The beautiful flowers are prolific and grow from 70 cm to 1.2 m tall.

Plant the seedsany time from mid to late autumn.  The seeds can be sown shallowly in pots or trays indoors and can take 30 - 90 days to germinate so be patient with them because the wait is very worth while.

Plant the seedlings about 30 cm apart in the garden once they reach12-15cm tall.

Because they grow tall you can make great use of them by planting alongside walls or in amongst leafy plants such as fernswhich they will rise above in a splash of colour.
