Spinacia oleracea
This high yeilding English style spinach grows quite large and
has leaves which can reach 22cm in length. The leaves are
dark green snd smooth textured. They have an excellent
flavour which develops early in their growth and makes them
very popular in the baby leaf market. The plant can reach
45-50 cm tall and reaches full maturity in 40-45 days. It
withstands very cold conditions and is low in oxalic acid
making it the sweetest of all spinachs. The young leaves
are very suitable for baby leaf production. They are
excellent for salads and stir fries. It grows very easily and
can be grown in partial shade. Spinach does best in free
draining soils with compost mixed in. Apply plenty of water
as with any leafy crops. Apply liquid fertiliser to ensure lush
foliage.

Sow seeds from late summer to early winter. Very
early spring sowings can be made in cooler climates. Sow
0.5 cm deep. Plant 2 to 3 seeds every hole spaced about
30cm apart and use the thinnings for baby leaf salad.
This plant is the first seed planted in spring time.
