Pompei is a scallion that has only a mild flavour and is wonderful in salads and eaten raw. It is often used like a spring onion because of its very early ripening, mild flavour and delicious atem and leaves. The base developes a small flat bulb that makes an ideal pickling onion for storing in vinegar for later use. It is a great pot vegetable because it does not grow large, looks attractive on the patio and is very early and fast growing. It makes a lovely display when planted along pathways and garden edges. This particular variety of scallion onion can be sown all year round. It generally takes7-10 weeks for the stems to be ready to harvest and 10-12 weeks for full bulb formation. For continual picking, ensure several sowings a few weeks apart. To sow, make drills 25-30cm apart and place seeds in clusters 20 cm apart. Liquid fertilser application will be beneficial. The plant tolerates both full sun or a partly shaded position that is enriched and has a well drained soil. It will give good results. These are ideal for Farmers Markets.
