BEAN - AZUKI BEAN - Bush Bean (Adzuki)

Vigna angularis

This lovely red, easily grown, bush bean, is very widely used in Asian
cooking. In Japan it is highly regarded for its health giving
properties and used in flavouring dishes from soup to
confectionary and icecream. It is widely eaten mixed
with sugar and made into a paste called Ancho. The
small red beans grow on an erect bush that produces
large quantities of short pods filled with the red seeds.
The pods will hold on the plant for harvesting well into
late autumn and even into winter. Direct sow seeds
10 - 15cm apart in rows that are 45cm apart. Gently
push the seeds into the soil, cover lightly and water.
Poor germination generally reflects over watering and
results in rotting seed. Beans are a nitrogen fixing crop.
Sow in Spring to Summer in a well drained, full sun
position. Make sure the soil is not too acidic by adding
some dynamic lifter or wood ash or lime before planting.
