Cucumis metuliferus
Kiwano is a native of semi arid Africa where it grows wild on the road-sides. This variety is extremely mild tasting with no bitterness and turns from a green colour into a lovely orange-red colour when it matures. It keeps for months at room temperature without deteriorating. It makes a great decoration around the house. It is eaten similarly to a cucumber when picked green but when mature its lime green jelly-like flesh can be eaten as a fruit and made into a fabulous dessert when sugar is added. Kiwano needs warm temperatures to germinate and will not germinate under 12C or over 35C It is recommended to sow in trays and transplant them into the field at the two true leaf stage. The best time for transplanting into an open field is in the spring when soil and air temperatures rise to around 15°C. while not needing high levels of nutrients and water it will do much better with both. Transplant (or direct sow) into the garden spaced about 1m apart. Harvest when they turn a rich yellow and store for 30 days before eating. This will help develope the best flavour.
