In warm zones carrot seed can be sown in almost any month of the year; although mid-summer sowings are often best avoided. The best months to sow in temperate zones are July through to March and in cold districts from August to February. Deep sandy soil or heavy soils with good structure allow roots to grow and expand quickly. Direct Sow by marking out shallow furrows which are spaced 20 - 30 cm apart and sow seed 6mm deep and cover the seed with sand or seed raising mix. Water gently and keep moist until seedlings are well established. Carrot seed likes darkness to germinate and good results can be achieved by covering the seed bed with planks of wood until seedlings begin to emerge when the planks should be removed immediately.
