Detroit is a biennial which is mostly cultivated as an annual vegetable. This variety is a very dark red crimson colour with strong skin and a lovely rich flavour. It is a reliable producer in the old style which has withstood the demands of time. The tops are rich red'green and can be cooked for the rich nutrients in the leaves and stems. The swollen edible root of the Detroit is rounded and is an attractive dark red colour. 9 weeks to maturity.

Detroit is a biennial which is mostly cultivated as an annual vegetable. This variety is a very dark red crimson colour with strong skin and a lovely rich flavour. It is a reliable producer in the old style which has withstood the demands of time. The tops are rich red'green and can be cooked for the rich nutrients in the leaves and stems. The swollen edible root of the Detroit is rounded and is an attractive dark red colour. 9 weeks to maturity. Beetroot is adaptable to all climate zones. A good idea with beetroot is to soak seeds for a few hours prior to direct sowing in drills 20-30cm apart and 12mm deep. Cover the seeds with compost or vermiculite and keep moist. The best times to sow seed in temperate climates is July to March,and September to February in colder areas Beetroot keeps well in open storage for a few weeks but will keep for 2 to 3 months when stored in a refrigerator.
