SILVERBEET - FORDHOOK GIANT This is probably the widest grown and best variety of silverbeet produced in Australia. The broad fleshy stems are surrounded by rich dark green wavy leaves which are rich in Iron and many other vitamins and minerals. This is easy to grow and will grow all winter in cold areas. Silverbeet is a member of the beetroot family and is often mistakenly called spinach. Silverbeet fordhook giant has white ribbed stems supporting large, green, crinkly leaves. All these parts are edible. Silverbeet is an easy vegetable to grow in the home garden. All climate zones are suitable to grow silverbeet, although it is best to avoid growing in very hot or frosty cold months. This variety of silverbeet is the largest. It has very broad dark green, white ribbed, wavy leaves and has been the industry standard for many years. All of these parts are edible. It is an easy vegetable to grow in the home garden and is high in vitamins. Suited to all climates, although is best to avoid growing in very hot and frost times. Soak the silverbeet seeds a few hours before sowing, as they only absorb water slowly. Sow thinly in drills 30-40cm apart and 12mm deep. Cover the seeds with vermiculite. Cover lightly with mulch (ie. shredded sugar cane mulch) Keep damp with light watering until seeldings emerge. (approx. 2 weeks). Have a year round supply with 2 or 3 sowings between Spring & Autumn.
