Raphanus sativus

This amazingly coloured radish is an old Heirloom from China. It has large 7-8cm diameter roots which are quite white while the inside flesh is vivid red in colour. The flesh is crispy and mild, with a sweet flavour perfect for salads, garnishes, or cooking. It takes a little longer than other radishes to reach full size but can also be eaten when quite small. It can be quite a talking point at the table because of the interesting watermelon look when sliced open

Radishes are a great way to start young children off with gardening. They are very easy to grow, will grow in almost any conditions and mature at a very fast, exciting rate. The seed should be planted 0.5-1mm deep as close as 2cm apart and in rows 10-15cm apart. They need good watering to prevent pithiness in hot conditions. Radishes can be planted all year round in any place in Australia. The fact that they emerge so very quickly makes them great for planting with vegetables that are slow to emerge as the radish seedling break up the surface and mark the rows where the other plants will emerge.
