They make excellent cut flowers. Ideally it should be mass planted for the best effect. Purple coneflower often grow over 1m in height, and is a great addition to a perennial border as it blooms over a long period from mid-summer into autumn when many other plants have finished. Regular cutting or dead-heading prolongs the floral display. Not suitable for the tropics but adaptable to a wide range of cool and warm zones. Prefers sun all day. Although it is tolerant of windy conditions, the blooms will have a better appearance if plants are sheltered from strong wind. Needs well drained soil of average quality. Its beautiful dark cone shaped centre is surrounded by rich, dusky pink petals. They make excellent cut flowers. Ideally, echinacea should be planted in mass for the grand effects. Plants can grow to 1m in height. It has a long flowering season from mid-summer to autumn. It prefers a full sun position and is quite tolerant of windy conditions but the flowers have a better appearance if protected from winds. It needs well drained soil of average quality. In temperate climates, sow seeds at almost any time of the year, but in cold districts, best sown during the spring and autumn months. Place seed in moist sand in a airtight container for a few weeks. Then place seeds in seedling trays or punnets by tamping the seed into a premium seed raising mix. Cover lightly with the mix and keep moist. Plant out into garden when the seedlings are established. Liquid fertilise as required.
