SWEDE - DOON MAJOR
SWEDE - DOON MAJOR
Brassica napobrassica
Doon Major is an old Irish Heritage swede variety. It is hardy and
disease resistant with mild, yellow, fine-grained, soft flesh which is
best harvested in the 100-150mm range. It was selected for its short
neck, globular shape and sweetness. It is very delicious in soups,
stews, casseroles and especially prized when baked. It stores well
and is an excellent source of Vitamin C, The young leaves can be
used as a green in salads and stir fries. This variety matures in
around 90 days.
Doon Major is highly prized world wide and is probably the finest
swede you will ever eat
Swedes like a soil that has been prepared with
lots of organic matter. The soil must be well drained, as for most
root vegetables. This is in order to prevent root rot. If drainage is
an issue consider raised bed gardening for this crop. The seeds
should be sown 1cm deep and 12-20cm apart in rows 30-50cm
apart. Sow in Sep- Apr in both Cool and Temperate areas and
Aug-May in the Subtropics and from Mar- Sept in the Tropics.
