SWEDE - DOON MAJOR

Brassica napobrassica

This great variety is becoming very popular due to the soft and buttery

texture of these high quality roots with a delicious and deriarable flavour.

The rich yellow bottoms and lovely butter-like flesh make this slow bolting

variety a winner with chefs.  It has a smaller root  picked earlier than some

other types but the sweet soft yellow flesh is very delicious in soups, stews,

casseroles and especially prized when baked. It stores well and is an excellent

sourceof Vitamin C. The young leaves can be used as a green in salads and

stir fries. The roots mature in around 90 days.

Swedes like a soil that has been pre-prepared
with lots of organic matter. The soil must be well
drained, as for most root vegetables. This is in
order to prevent root rot. If drainage is an issue
consider raised bed gardening for this crop. The
seeds should be sown1cm deep and 12-20cm
apart in rows 30-50cm apart. Sow in Sep- Apr in
both Cool and Temperate areas and Aug-May in
the Subtropics and from Mar- Sept in the full Tropics.
