SQUASH-GREEN GEM
SQUASH-GREEN GEM
Cuxurbita pepo
This delicious button squash has a delightful appearence
with a droplet shaped green and white speckled squash.
The plants show good resistance to mildew, They are
typically about 10cm in diameter and are best picked
and eaten at only about 6-8cm in diameter when they
have a softer skin and can be cooked whole. When left to
mature a little longer it developes a lovely flavour and can
be stuffed and baked whole in the skin. Green Gem has a
bush type growth habit which makes it an excellent variety
for vegetable plots where space is limited. It is a great
variety for use in greenhouses or grow bags. Green Gem
is a very early variety bearing edible fruit within 54 days
of planting.
Squash seeds should be planted about 1-2cm
deep in rich composted soil and kept growing fast with
plenty of water. Sow Oct-Dec in Cold and Temperate
areas: Aug- Feb in Subtropics and Feb-Sep in the
Tropics. Plant the seeds about 1m apart in all directions
or in rows, 75cm apart and in rows 1.2-1.5m apart.
