Sow watermelons from Nov-Dec in cold areas; from Sep-Dec in temperate areas; from Aug-Dec in Subtropical areas and all year round in the full Tropics. Watermelons can be sown 2-3cm deep about 75cm apart in rows 1.5-2m apart. Watermelons are rich in vitamin C In cooler areas watermelons require a bright, warm growing season of about 3 months duration. The use of row covers such as black plastic weedmatting are highly recommended for extending the growing season in order to ensure maturity and to increase yield. Pick fruit when the underside goes yellow and they exhibit a hollow sound when rapped firmly with the nuckles of your hand.
