Telopea speciosissima

The floral emblem of NSW has truly beautiful
scarlet flowers, which are borne in large domed
heads, 10-15 cm across, in spring and early
summer. These are surrounded by striking. bright
red bracts. This sturdy and vigorous shrub grows
to 3m tall with a spread of 1.8m. It is a great
specimen plant in any garden. Being a tree, the
seed can take up to 3-4 weeks or even longer to
germinate. Pre-soaking the seed briefly in warm
water may assist germination. Place the seed
raising mixture into a seedling tray or punnet, then
place the seeds on top, and tamp down. Cover the
seed with a light covering of vermiculite or fine
compost to approximately 3mm depth. Keep the
seed raising mixutre moist but not saturated and
prick out seedlings as soon as possible (two leaf
stage), and plant up into a larger pot. Protect them
from frosts. When the plant is 30-45 cm high, plant
it out into well drained position in the garden and
support it with stakes and ties to prevent any wind
damage untilit has reached maturity.
