Thymus vulgaris

Thyme is a small prostrate, perennial herb that grows to 20-30cm in height. Useful plant for ground cover, rockeries and garden borders, also suitable for container growing. Use the fresh Thyme leaves in soups, casserole, stews, or in seasoning for poultry, meat and fish dishes. Thyme prefers a dry warm climate. So if you live in a cooler region, grow thyme next to a rock or concrete path so that the heat reflects off of it, onto the plant. Thyme prefers a full sun or partial shade aspect, and enjoys a light, well drained soil. This small, prostrate, perennial herb will grow to 20 - 30 cm in height. It is a useful plant for ground cover, rockeries, and garden borders. It is also very suitable for container growing. Thymus vulgaris has masses of pink-purple coloured flowers that attract bees. Use the fresh thyme leaves in soups, casseroles, stews, or in seasoning for poultry, meat and fish dishes. Sow the seeds in Spring, Summer and early Autumn in clumps spaced 30cm apart The seeds should be pressed into the soil and lightly water until germination has taken affect. This can take up to 3-4 weeks. Persevere with them because seed raised thyme plants do much better than plants grown from division. The plants prefer full sunlight and once established, will tolerate quite dry conditions. Ensure the position in which you plant your seeds has good drainage.
