TARRAGON - RUSSIAN TARRAGON
Artemisia dracunculus
Russian Tarragon is a very productive plant with mildly flavoured leaves. It grows to 1m tall and is more hardy and vigorous than other forms of Tarragon. It does very well in poor soils and tolerates neglect. Russian Tarragon will produce many leaves from early spring right through to autumn. The leaves are used in salads and cooked dishes. The early shoots in spring can be eaten as a substitute for asparagus.
Sow the seeds in pots about 0.5-1.0 cm deep in early spring. Keep the plants warm at night and transplant them in the garden after frosts have passed and the soil has warmed. They should be spaced about 30-45 cm apart. Keep the soil moist until the plants are well established. This plant thrives from having the leaves pruned for use in the kitchen.
