TAISAI - TAI SAI
TAISAI - TAI SAI
Brassica rapa var chinensis
This is another vigorous, fast growing Asian vegetable with a very pleasant and unique flavour. It is often confused with Pak Choi and Bok Choi which are shorter and thicker stemmed and have a less concentrated flavour. Taisai is very fast growing and will reach maturity in 48 days. It will grow to 520cm in height and has long slender stems and a smaller s, darker green spoonshaped tip on the leaf. This variety has excellent tolerance to both heat and cold but, like bokchoi and pak choi, does need plenty of water when growing. It is an ideal plant for farmers markets. It is suitable for most Asian dishes and compliments the flavours of both soy sauce and spicy peppers very well.

Sow at any time any where in Australia. It will tend to flowering earlier in extreme heat conditions but tolerates heat better than similar varieties. Soe the seed 0.5-1.0 cm deep in rich damp soil. Plant spacing should be about 30 cm but will tolerate closer spacing in richer soil. Plant rows should be 75-90 cm apart. Pick in 48 days
