OKRA - CLEMSONS SPINELESS
OKRA - CLEMSONS SPINELESS
Ablemoschus esculentus
This frost sensitive plant can grow as an erect shrub.
It produces long green flower pods which have white
seeds and the pod and seeds are eaten when young.
It is cooked in soups, stews, battered, fried,
steamed, grilled or dried. It is used as thickening
agent for soups and stews and can be ground
into a fine powder and added to food such as
cous cous to stop the grains from sticking.
The seeds can be pressed to make a
good quality oil high in protein. Okra can be roasted
and ground to make a coffee substitute.
Okra originates in Egypt and needs warm soil to
succeed. It can be grown in Temperate regions but
needs care to ensure enough warmth exists for it to
be successful.
Pick the fruit everyday to achieve the best results
and to ensure the pods do not get to old.

Okra originates in Egypt and needs warm soil to
succeed. It can be grown in Temperate regions but
needs care to ensure enough warmth exists for it to
be successful. Soak the seed overnight before
planting to achieve best germination. Plant the seed
2cm deep in the garden when frosts are well clear
Keep the soil fertile, well drained and moist. Okra
likes very slightly acid soil around pH 6-6.5 and in
full sun with a spacing of 35-45cm.
Pick the fruit everyday to achieve the best results
and to ensure the pods do not get to old.
