MARJORAM - SWEET MARJORAM

Origanum majorana

Sweet Marjoram is a highly aromatic plant that can grow up to 40 cm high. It originates in the mediterranean but has long been grow elsewhere for its sweet and spicy, small grey-green leaves. The tiny white flowers are borne in short spikes with very tightly packed bracts. The leaves are used fresh or dried (better to use fresh) for savory foods. Marjoram has a special affinity with tomatoes and meaty dishes. It grows well in warm climates, but must be well drained in areas that get a lot of rain/water.

Marjoram does not like frost and prefers full sun. It does best in rich soils, that contain decayed animal manure and compost. This variety of marjoram, known as sweet or knotted marjoram, is the one most commonly grown in herb gardens. It is a tender bushy perennial herb, that usually grown as an annual as it does not survive cold winters. Can grow to a height of approx 60 cm. Grows in warm zones and must be well drained. Full sun position and likes rich soil that has plenty of enriched compost dug in. Add lime or dolomite if the soil is too acidic. Seeds are slow to germinate and are usually planted in seedling trays. Put into the garden in spring when the seedlings are established. Plant in small clumps 15cm apart. Apply liquid fertiliser such as an organic sea weed solution every 6 weeks.
