LIQUORICE
LIQUORICE
Glycyrrhiza glabra
Liquorice is a perennial legume that grows to 1m tall and produces distinctly flavoursome roots which are 30-50 times sweeter than sugar. The flavour of Liquorice is used in a great many ways and it is said to have some medicinal uses such as liver and viral problems. The over use of liquorice can have adverse problems. Liquorice does best in deep fertile, well drained soil in full sun.
The very small pinhead sized, kidney shaped seeds need to be scarified before planting. This can be done by lining a jam jar with sandpaper and rolling the seeds quite vigorously for about one minute. The seeds are slow to germinate and can take up to 6 weeks to emerge. Plant them out after the soil has warmed in spring. Keep the soil warm and moist but not wet. Plant the seedlings out in spring when the soil has warmed. Plant them 30cm apart in rows 60cm apart
