LEMON BALM

Melissa officinalis

Lemon Balm This perennial grows to approx 60cm high and is grown for its fresh lemon-scented and lemon-flavoured leaves. Small white flowers are borne in late summer and attract pollinating bees to the garden. Lemon balm spreads rapidly, dies down in winter but shoots again in spring. The leaves are used to make a calming herbal tea. Also great to add some leaves to an ol stocking and soak it in the bath with you for a calming bath. The leaves also give a light, lemon flavour to fruit salads, jellies, iced tea and summer drinks. Can also be used as a substitute for lemon peel in cooking recipes.

Prefers full sun to partial shade (if grown in warmer climates, part shade will promote better growth). Soil should be rich in organic matter and kept moist and well mulched.
