LEEK - MUSSELLBURGH

Allium ampeloprasum var porrum.

Remarkable earliness and length. Beautiful full-sized leeks. In favourable soil and culture, the white stems are over a 30 cm long to the first leaf. Upright, medium green leaves. While not hardy enough for over-wintering, it will withstand medium-heavy frost (-7 C) without losing its healthy appearance. Leeks have broad concave leaves, the sheathing bases of which form a tight cylinder, being the edible part. Leeks are easier to grow than onions, and more suited to colder climates.

Sow in early autumn and spring. Sow the seeds about 30cm apart. They love very fertile soil. Ensure plenty of water. During the growing period hill the plants with soil 2 or 3 times, higher with each hoeing. This forces the leaves higher up the plant, the result being extra long blanched stalks, making a much greater edible portion.
