KAILAAN - CHINESE BROCCOLI - GAI LAN
KAILAAN - CHINESE BROCCOLI - GAI LAN
Brassica oleracea var. alboglabra.
This is another vigorous, fast growing Asian vegetable with a very pleasant and unique flavour. It has thick, flat, glossy blue-green leaves with thick succulent stems that will grow to 60 cm; tiny flower heads similar to those of broccoli which produce many secondary shoots over a long period after the main flowering shoot has been harvested for cooking. it will grow all year round in nearly every part of Australia. It takes an average of 55 75 days to fully mature but can be eaten at an even younger stage than full maturity. It is excellent in stirfies, blanched with a garlic sauce or as an aditive to curries and casseroles.
Sow the seed at any time. Plant 0.5-1.0 cm deep and keep moist. Thin seedlings to 20 cm at full maturity. The thinnings can be used in your stirfries. It will crop over an extended period so there is less need for continuous plantings.
