Red Seeded Citron is thought to be the ancestor of the modern watermelon. It is not very edible raw but once cooked is very suitable for pies and jams. It has a very high pectin content and makes great jams mixed with sweeter fruit such as berries. It can be used to make pickles, fruitcakes, biscuits and puddings. The fruit can be stored for up to 12 months. The plants are grown like watermelons but are much hardier. The seed should be sown 1.0-2.0cm deep directly into the garden in richly composted soil. Space the plants 50cm apart in rows 1.2-1.5m apart. Sow three weeks after the last frost has finished in Cold and Temperate areas and from September to February in Tropical and Subtropical areas. Melons do very well when a nitrogen fixing plant, such as clover or pea plants are grown with them. Despite a mistaken believe otherwise, melons do not ripen once picked so leave them to mature on the vine until the stem comes away from the fruit with ease
