STOCKS - MIRACLE LAVENDER
Matthiola incana
Stocks are one of the oldest known garden flowers. Sold
commercially in Roman days they were popular because they
not only had large spikes of beautiful flowers but they have a
beautifully strong scent too. They are cold hardy
annuals with grey green foliage and tall upright columns of
flowers which open from the bottom of the stem. These
stems can be 50-75 cm long and smell of cinnamon, cloves
and other spicy aromas. Historically they have been planted
near doorways, paths, patios and windows so that the scent
drifts inside the house. They flower from late spring to summer
Plants produce single and double flowers with only the singles
producing viable seed.

producing viable seed. Plant seed on the surface by pressing
gently on the soil, keep moist and transplant when frosts are
finished. Seeds take 14-25 days to germinate. Stocks will last
for up to 12 weeks as a cut flower if picked when only 25-30%
of the flowers have opened. This variety is compact, bushy
and easy to raise with a glorious fragrance. This is a very
attractive plant with lovely lavender colouring and excellent
vase life.
