ENDIVE - GREEN CURLED RUFFEC
ENDIVE - GREEN CURLED RUFFEC
Green Curled Ruffec is an heirloom gourmet variety with a beautiful appearance that also makes it an attractive ornamental in the garden. The smooth and pleasantly bitter taste of blanched endive is perfect to cleanse the palate between spicy dishes. Blanching creates a milder taste by blocking the sunlight to turn the green leaves light yellow or white close to the base. It takes about 90 days to reach maturity but individual leaves can be cut earlier than this. The deeply cut and curled leaves with fringed margins make mixed green salads fancy looking and more flavorful. The plants are about the size of a leaf lettuceplant.

Endive may be grown on a wide range of soil types but do best on loose fertile loams with good quantities of added compost. Soils should provide good water holding capacity with good internal drainage. Transplant only for the earliest crops. Grow transplants 6 weeks prior to the time they are needed using trays. Allow 20cm between plants in the garden. Rows should be 35-45cm apart.
