Allium schoenoprassum

Onion flavoured chives are perennial herbs that make an attractive edging for the herb garden. They grow in clumps that send up 30cm tall grass like, hollow, tubular, green leaves, tapering to a point at the top. They can be grown in pots or directly in the garden. They can withstand extreme temperatures and are frost hardy. Chives are best used for flavouring or garnishing, and their flowers can also be eaten fresh. Chives are companions for carrots, tomatoes, fruit trees ad roses.

Sow your seeds in circular drills, this will allow a nice cluster/cllump of chives. Direct sowing is best in spring. They will perform their best in well enriched soil that is moist. Can be grown in part shade, though full sun is best. Can apply liquid fertiliser monthly if required.
