Cichorium intybus
Travisio red is an Italian plant that is easy to grow. It has a slightly bitter taste that goes well with dishes such as risotto. It in addition to being tasty chicory is said to be good for insomnia and purifying the blood. Pliny also claims that it was the Egyptians who bred radicchio from its more wild ancestor, chicory. In the Middle Ages it was especially popular among monks, who welcomed anything that would add zest and flavour to their vegetarian diet. This plant can be sown at most times but does not do well in very hot seasons. It is best sown in temperate climates during summer so that it matures and is ready for picking over late autumn and winter. Plant the seeds 0.5-1.0cm deep, 20-30cm apart in rows 20-40cm apart in rich well composted soil and keep moist. It takes 70 days from planting to mature.
