SWEDE - ASPEN PURPLE TOP

Brassica napobrassica

This uncommon variety is becoming very popular due to the consistency

with which it produces good quality round roots with dark purple tops

and rich yellow bottoms and lovely butter-like flesh. It is a slow bolting

variety that has a smaller root  than some other types but has sweet

firm yellow flesh that is very delicious in soups, stews, casseroles and

especially prized when baked. It stores well and is an excellent source

of Vitamin C. The young leaves can be used as a green in salads and

stir fries. The roots mature in around 90 days.  Swedes like a soil

that has been prepared with lots of organic matter. The soil must be

well drained, as do most root vegetables. This is in order to prevent

root rot. If drainage is an issue consider raised bed gardening for this crop.
