This spinach tasting plant is a native of tropical Asia but it can be grown in any frost free area of Australia. It can be cooked in the same way as spinach but is often used raw in salads. It is especially prized for its ability to thicken soups, gravies, stews and other dishes when cooked. It is a very attrractive plant with green stems and green leaves and makes a great patio potplant. The seeds should be planted outside when night temperatures are above 15C or about 6 weeks earlier, inside, when planted for seedlings. The seeds should be planted about 2cm deep and 30-50cm apart in rows about 80cm apart. They like plenty of water and are very fast growing. The growing tips are picked for use in salad mixes and for cooking in Asian style dishes.
