Saponaria officinalis

This soapwort is an lovely low growing perrenial
creeping plant that has delicate attractive rose pink
and white flowers. It grows freely under most
conditions in any soil. The crushed leaves or roots
have been used as a soap since the Renaissance.
Museum conservators still use the soap made from
its leaves and roots to clean delicate fabrics. It also
makes a fine hair shampoo. Soapworts are also
used in the food industry, especially in the making of
halva (a sweet made using tahini and sugar or honey).
Some butterfly species are attracted to soapwort and
use this plant to feed their larva. Plant seeds early in
the spring season in shallow finely tithed soil and
water well until established. It prefers light, well
draining soil. If your soil is heavy clay, mix in ample
amounts of sand prior to planting. Plants prefer to
grow in full sun to partial shade. Once your Soapwort

plants are established, they should grow
well for years with almost no maintenance. They
will easily withstand dry periods. Water them during
dry periods, once a  week. Plants will bloom in early
summer. After blooming, cut plants back after the
first bloom, and you will get a second bloom.
