ROCKET - DRAGONS TONGUE

Diplotaxis tennuifolia

This perrenial plant is erect, clumping, with dark
green heavily lobed leaves with purplish red veins.
It can grow to 55cm in height. It has a spicy, nutty
flavour and a delicious aromatic smell. The yellow
flowers produce a 5cm long fruit which is also
edible. It is highly prized in Italian cuisine and well
worth experimenting with. Sow seeds in most of
the year but avoid deep winter or high summer
plantings. Sow seed 0.5-1.0cm deep and 35cm
apart. Keep soil moist and do not allow to dry out.
The plants have very good vigour and are tolerant
of harsh conditions better than other rockets. This
makes them quite bolt resistant. It is a heavy cropper
so keep the soil well enriched and apply a light
application of an organic sea weed solution every
2 weeks will also generate new healthy tender growth.
