Native to the praire states of the United States, purple coneflower is a hardy, drought resistant plant. Its dark, cone-shaped centre is surrounded by rich, dust pink ray petals. They make excellent cut flowers. Ideally it should be mass planted for the best effect. Purple coneflower often grow over 1m in height, and is a great addition to a perennial border as it blooms over a long period from mid-summer into autumn when many other plants have finished. Regular cutting or dead-heading prolongs the floral display. Not suitable for the tropics but adaptable to a wide range of cool and warm zones. Prefers sun all day. Although it is tolerant of windy conditions, the blooms will have a better appearance if plants are sheltered from strong wind. Needs well drained soil of average quality.
