Calendula officinalis
'Touch of Red' takes it's name from the russet-tones at the edges of each petal. The predominant colors of each small flower are in the more pale yellow and tangerine tones with blooms 5-10 cm across. These edible flowers bloom non-stop from late autumn through to spring in areas with milder winters. Calendular flowers are a familiar sight in cottage gardens and in colourful window boxes. They are native to Southern Europe, but flourish here in Australia. The plant grows to a height of 23cm with a 15cm spread. The flowers are either single or double and yellow or bright orange in colour, with raised yellow centres. Grows best in a warm sunny position with moist but well drained soil. Propagate from seed by placing premium seed raising mix in a pot. Sprinkle seeds on top and tamp seeds down, cover lightly with vermiculite. Keep seed raising mixture moist. Once seedlings reach a height of 3-4cm, plant out into the garden. Liquid fertilise as required. Dead head the spent flowers to prolong flowering season. Calendula petals make a wonderful addition to all salad mixes, giving a dash of colour and a distinctive style to your plate. The plant is claimed to be very effective in reducing twitch (couch) grass in the garden and is also used against hair and skin problems. Grows all the year giving a good display.
