Nigella sativa

Nigella sativa is similar to Nigella damascena with
paler coloured flowers. It is an annual which grows
to 30cm and produces large pods filled with black
seeds which look like onion seeds. The seeds are
very aromatic and are used as a culinary spice. The
seeds have been used both medicinally and as a
condiment since 2000BCE. They are very highly
regarded and currently under investigation in wide
ranging studies. Commercial production of "Black
Seed Oil" has now begun. It is used primarliy as a
flavour in bread and pastry making and in
middle-eastern style dishes but has scope for
experimentation in a wider range of dishes.
The seeds self seed easily and will grow in most
soil types and in most areas. It prefers a sunny
position and is not frost tender. Do not overwater.
Sow seed from spring to autumn. Plant seed
shallowly and keep damp until germination occurs
in a few days. It does not do well in wet soils.
