It is valued for its lime green leaves which are up to 4 inches long and leafy tops, which are used widely for seasoning soups, stews and sauces. The leaves of the clove basil are used to keep away mosquitoes by burning and crushing for the aroma. It is said to be useful in treating chest problems such as coughs or bronchitis and for the easing of stomach cramps and pain Basils lose flavour quickly in cooking and should be added late in the preparation of the dish. It grows to 1.2m and reaches maturity in about 80 days. It will grow in a rich, well-drained, soil in full sun. Pinch out growing tips to encourage bushier plants and to delay flowering It should be grown in a spot receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight. It is actually quite hardy and will grow continuously given only water Very much a warm season herb it does not tolerate frosts. Basil appreciates added organic matter in the soil.
