Lemongrass is a perrenial, mostly tropical and subtropical plant that is very commonly used in Asian cuisine. It can be grown in mild areas further south but needs good protection from winds and cold weather. The ribbon-like leaves grow in clumps and reach to 1 m in height. They swell at the base to form a fleshy edible stolon. lemongrass requires rich humus laden soil and high levels of humidity and plenty of sun. The sweet-sour tatse of Lemongrass makes the leaves ideal for making a tea, or for tying together and using in marinades and soups. The fleshy stem can be cut and added to curries, fish dishes, soups, and most Asian dishes. It adds a lovely flavour to salads. Israeli doctors have claimed that Lemongrass has good levels of anti-cancer properties. lemon grass seeds are very small and should be started indoors. They need high levels of light for successful germination and also good damp soil. Sprinkle the seeds on the top of a pot or tray and gently firm the seeds into the soil....do not cover them with soil. Cover the tray with clingwrap to aid in keeping the seeds moist until germination occurs. They need continuous soil temperature above 21C until well established. Transplant into the garden at any time when the soil temperature is over 21c at night. Keep them deeply mulched in cold weather. If temperatures go below 10C in winter then consider bringing them indoors until well into spring.
